A guide to finding care · field notes

What will I ask at the visit?

Pick the questions that matter to you. A short list is easier to bring into a conversation than a page full of new terms.

What the answer rests on

A prescription is the start of a plan

The Federation of State Medical Boards said in May 2026 that picking from a treatment menu alone is not enough.

This group of state doctor-licensing boards says the person prescribing must first review your health and decide what care you need.

Under that advice, patients must be able to bring further questions to their doctor or other treating professional.

This is guidance for state boards, not a single rule that replaces each state's law.

Bring the list, leave room for replies, and ask for plain words when an answer gets hard to follow. You can leave a question open.
